André Ayew International Career

Marseille

After a brief spell at the youth academy of 1860 Munchen in Germany, Ayew returned to Ghana and started playing with the youth team of Nania FC in Accra. Due to his stellar performance in the youth team, he was promoted to the senior team when he was 14.

In 2006, after two seasons as a senior member of Nania FC, Ayew departed the club to join the youth team of Marseille, where his father had also played. In 2007, he was promoted to the senior squad and signed a three-year contract.

On 15 August 2007, he made his debut for Marseille in an away Ligue 1 match against Valenciennes. Marseille went on to lose the game 2-1. A Champions League debut came at an away game against Porto on the 6th November of the same year, which ended in a 2-1 loss.

His first start and first win came in a 2-1 win against Lyon. Ayew went on to feature 13 times for the club in the first season without any goals scored.

Lorient (Loan)

At the start of the 2008/2009 season, Marseille bought three new strikers and Ayew was deemed a surplus striker. So, he was loaned out to Lorient for the season and made his debut on 16th August 2008 for the club. He scored his first professional goal in a 1-1 draw against Sochaux. He scored two more goals in 22 appearances for the club. In the summer of 2009, he returned to Marseille and was loaned out again on the last day of the transfer window to newly-promoted Ligue 2 side Arles-Avignon for the 2009/2010 season.

Arles-Avignon (Loan)

Ayew took the number 10 jersey and played on the right-wing position at Arles-Avignon. On 11th September, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Angers. His first goal for the club came in a 4-2 defeat to Tours.

Even though Ayew missed the whole of January due to his involvement in the African Cup of Nations for the Black Stars of Ghana, he still scored four goals for Arles-Avignon. His goals were of great significance as they helped Arles-Avignon to get promoted.

He scored in a 2-1 win against Le Havre, and he scored again in a 1-1 draw with Guingamp. And on 14th May, the club was promoted to Ligue 1 following a 1-0 win against Clermont. Ayew was instrumental in the promotion. At the end of the season, he returned to Marseille.

Return to Marseille

Ayew returned to Marseille in August 2010 to sign a 3-year contract extension, and this would keep him at the club till 2014. That season, he became a regular starter under Didier Deschamps as coach in this second spell, and he rewarded the coach’s trust by scoring crucial goals.

He scored in his second league match against Valenciennes, despite a 3-2 defeat. He also scored a brace against Arle-Avignon, his former club, in a 3-0 win. His first professional hat-trick also came in a 4-2 win over Nice that season.

Ayew scored in victories that moved Marseille through the Round of 16 and the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-finals. He had a man of the match performance in the final match of the Trophees des Champions 2011. He scored a hat-trick, two goals in the 90th minute to secure a win over Lille in a thrilling 5-4 win.

André Ayew scored his first Champions League goal in a 1-0 win against Inter Milan in the 93rd minute to carry them to the quarter-finals in the 2011/2012 season. The crucial goals and scintillating displays earned him the Marseille Player of the Season. He signed another contract extension for one year to keep him at the club till 2015.

Swansea City

For the 2015/2016 season, Ayew completed a transfer to the Premier League side Swansea on a 4-year deal for a reported fee of 13 million. He hit the ground running, scoring a goal on his debut game in a 2-2 draw at Chelsea. His second goal came in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in his second game.

It seemed he was in the form of his life as he scored a goal and created an assist in the next match against Manchester United. These performances helped him win the Premier League player of the month in August 2015. He scored a total of 12 goals for the Swans in 50 games.

West Ham

Ayew moved to Premier League side West Ham on the 8th August 2016 when he penned a three-year contract to keep him at the club till 2020. His transfer fee was reportedly 13.5 million, a club-record signing at the time.

A thigh injury marred his debut game against Chelsea, and he was subbed after playing for just 35 minutes. He returned to first-team action in an EFL Cup clash against Chelsea two months later. His first goal for West Ham came in a 4-1 win over his former club Swansea City.

However, Ayew couldn’t complete his three-year contract at West Ham as his former club Swansea activated his buy out clause, paying a reported 20 million (18m plus add-ons).

Return to Swansea City

January 2018 found André Ayew back in Swansea, and he completed the 2017/2018 season at Swansea. However, by July 2018, the team was relegated from the English Premier League, and he was loaned to the Turkish side, Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce

At Fenerbahce, Ayew scored five goals in 29 games in the 2018/2019 season. However, even though there was an option for a permanent move in his loan deal, it wasn’t exercised, and he went back to Swansea City at the end of the season.

Al Saad

At the end of the 2020/2021 season, Ayew left Swansea City as a free agent as they didn’t renew his contract. He then signed a two-year contract with the Qatari club Al Saad, where he is to date. Ayew has shown his prolific goal-scoring side as he has found the back of the net seven times in nine appearances. He has already won the Emir of Qatar Cup in his short stay at the club.
