In preparation for the biggest international football tournament, Ghana has played several friendly games.

The only game they played before the group stage, is a friendly match against Switzerland, just a few days before the group stage kick-off. Somewhat surprisingly, Ghana defeated the Swiss team by 2:0. 

Ghana was situated in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay. Although the game against Portugal was the most high-profile match for the Black Stars, the most anticipated game was the one against Uruguay.

At the same time, the clash versus La Celeste was a due-or-die moment for both as they were aiming to qualify for the next round.

Before the start of the tournament, Portugal was viewed as the clear and number one favourite to advance through.

Based on the roster and history, Uruguay and Ghana were supposed to fight for the number two spot, with South Korea as the team with almost no chance to advance.

However, things panned out very differently in the end. While Portugal was able to justify their favourite’s status and win the group, both Uruguay and Ghana suffered a letdown.

Thanks to the last-minute 2:1 win in favour of South Korea over Portugal, the Taegeuk Warriors were able to advance beyond the group stage for only the third time in their history.

Ghana finished last on the table with one win and two defeats. But with the way they played, they deserved a much higher position in this tournament.
