In preparation for the biggest international football tournament, Ghana has played several friendly games.
The only game they played before the group stage, is a friendly match against Switzerland, just a few days before the group stage kick-off. Somewhat surprisingly, Ghana defeated the Swiss team by 2:0.
Ghana was situated in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay. Although the game against Portugal was the most high-profile match for the Black Stars, the most anticipated game was the one against Uruguay.
At the same time, the clash versus La Celeste was a due-or-die moment for both as they were aiming to qualify for the next round.

Before the start of the tournament, Portugal was viewed as the clear and number one favourite to advance through.
Based on the roster and history, Uruguay and Ghana were supposed to fight for the number two spot, with South Korea as the team with almost no chance to advance.
However, things panned out very differently in the end. While Portugal was able to justify their favourite’s status and win the group, both Uruguay and Ghana suffered a letdown.
Thanks to the last-minute 2:1 win in favour of South Korea over Portugal, the Taegeuk Warriors were able to advance beyond the group stage for only the third time in their history.
Ghana finished last on the table with one win and two defeats. But with the way they played, they deserved a much higher position in this tournament.
Ghana Squad for the World Cup 2022
Ghana has a lot of great players. The squad mainly comprises some very experienced as well as young and up-and-coming players.
The most notable players in Ghana’s squad are Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew.
But the standout performers of the tournament were the team’s captain Andre Ayew and the young Ajax attacker Mohammed Kudus. Other top players that deserve a mention were Osman Bukari, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Tariq Lamptey, Mohammed Salisu, and Salis Abdul Samed.
Ghana Stats in the World Cup
Ghana has had somewhat decent results in football’s biggest international competition. So far, their biggest success was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2010 tournament.
Unfortunately for them, they lost in the penalty shootout. The wounds were still fresh as the Black Stars saw this competition as the perfect opportunity to exact revenge on Uruguay for what happened at their previous game.
This was Ghana’s fourth appearance at the World Cup. They qualified for the next round two times, while twice being eliminated in the group stage.
This tournament saw the same result as the previous one in Russia. Ghana ended as the last team in their group.
However, the results and the style of play in 2022 were much better. Ghana has nothing to be ashamed of.
The only sour taste in their mouths is another that exists at the hands of Uruguay. La Celeste won by 2:0 on the last match day of the group.
