The 2022 African Cup of Nations gave the entire world the taste of real African football. Here is an article where you will find out the Africa Cup of Nations results, including AFCON scores, Africa Cup of Nations betting and predictions for the next edition.
AFCON Group Results 2022
The 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) was the 33rd edition of the biennial African men’s football championship, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Cameroon hosted the 2022 AFCON, with 24 countries slugging it out to earn the continental title. Originally scheduled for June and July 2021, the tournament was postponed until January 2022.
The continental showpiece kicked off on the 9th of January 2022 and ended on the 3rd of February 2022.
Here is the result list for the group stage with a focus on the pre-tournament favourites and how they faired. Thus, read on to learn more about the AFCON results.
Senegal
Senegal’s best finish before AFCON 2022 was being runner-up in 2002 and 2019 in their previous 15 appearances in the competition. However, they were backed as the favourite by most bookmakers worldwide to win the AFCON 2022 title.
They are the only African country in the top 20 of the world rankings before the continental showpiece helped them rank so high. Moreover, being able to go unbeaten in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers results made it easy to see the logic behind this tip.
Senegal opened their Group B campaign against Zimbabwe in an unconvincing fashion. They laboured to a 1-0 win, thanks to a last-gasp penalty, duly dispatched by their star player, Sadio Mane.
Senegal didn’t fare better in their remaining 2 group-stage games as they played goalless draws against Guinea and Malawi. However, these Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers results were enough to make Senegal finish as Group B winners.
Algeria
The 2019 champions were one of the top two favourites, the other being Senegal, to win the AFCON 2022 and rightfully so. In the build-up to the tournament, the North Africans went on a 34-match unbeaten streak.
This dated back to a 1-0 loss to the Benin Republic in October 2018. This red-hot form culminated in them winning their AFCON qualifiers results without losing a single game.
Algeria began their quest to defend their title embarrassingly, as they played a goalless draw against Sierra Leone.
They bowed out of the competition in a tepid fashion by losing to both Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast in their remaining group-stage games. They eventually finished at the bottom of E.
Cameroon
Cameroon is the 2nd most successful team in the competition’s history.
They won the continental showpiece in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, and 2017 and were the favourite for this one, Cameroon being the host. They qualified for the tournament automatically by virtue of being the host country.
Cameroon finished their group-stage campaign with 7 points. They won 4-1 against Ethiopia before drawing 1-1 against Cape Verde in a dead-rubber final game. They finished as group A winners.
Nigeria
The Super Eagles were one of the favourites to claim a fourth AFCON title, having recorded previous successes in 1980, 1994, and 2013. The West African giant has a pretty enviable record of being perfect in third-place matches.
They’ve won seven out of seven third-place games. The last of these victories came in the previous edition when they toppled Tunisia 1-0 to win the bronze medal.
Nigeria began their Group D campaign by beating fellow title hopefuls Egypt 1-0, thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s solitary strike in the first half.
They followed their opening game victory with 3-1 and 2-0 victories over Sudan and Guinea-Bissau, respectively. They finished their group stage campaign with 9 points, winning all 3 of their games and becoming the only team to have a 100% record in the AFCON 2022 group stage, with their pre-tournament predictions shaping up to be on the money.
Egypt
Egypt is the most successful team in the competition’s history, having won the showpiece in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010.
Any team with Mo Salah in its ranks will always be a contender for any available title. Egypt began their Africa Cup of Nations fixtures with a 1-0 loss to another pre-tournament favourite, Nigeria.
They subsequently won their remaining 2 group games against Guinea Bissau and Sudan (both 1-0) to put elimination fears to bed. They finished as Group D runners-up, which was enough to punch their ticket to the knock-out stage of the AFCON 2022.
Ghana
It is the third most successful team in AFCON history, having won the competition in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982.
Ghana began their Group C campaign with a 1-0 loss to one of the tournament’s dark horses, Morocco.
They could only muster a single point from their remaining 2 group games. Ghana drew 1-1 with Cape Verde in the second game and lost 3-2 to first-timers Comoros in a must-win game. The defeat sealed their fate and consigned them to the bottom of the group.

Africa Cup Of Nations Results for Ghana
Ghana was eliminated from the AFCON 2022 in the group stage after failing to win any of their three AFCON fixtures.
Morocco 1 – 0 Ghana
Ghana lost the opening game of the AFCON 2022 after conceding a late goal from Soufiane Boufal.
Gabon 1 – 1 Ghana
The Ghanaians played arguably their best game against Gabon before conceding another late goal, which would later prove fatal after the debacle against Comoros. Captain Andre Ayew opened the scoring before they were pegged back late on.
Ghana 2 – 3 Comoros
After picking up just a solitary point from their first two games, the Black Stars needed a win to advance to the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
However, they failed to get the required result, thanks in no small part to the sending-off of captain Andre Ayew. This result was a big disappointment considering that Ghana was tipped to win the AFCON 2022 title.
Africa Cup of Nations Results Predictions for 2024
The next edition of AFCON is not so far away, with Ivory Coast set to welcome the best sides in Africa. The tournament will be played in the middle of the year as against the beginning of the year.
Here are some of the predictions for the Africa Cup of Nations results in 2024.
Senegal
Senegal should retain their AFCON title next year. Most of their players are still at the peak of their powers, and the rest of the continent’s heavy-weights are in a rebuilding process.
It is safe to say Senegal will be the team to beat in AFCON 2024.
Nigeria
Nigeria will come back stronger in AFCON 2024. The West Africans were unlucky with injuries to key players in the last edition.
However, with a clean bill of health and a favourable Africa Cup of Nations fixtures list, Nigeria should get to the final.
Egypt
Egypt is no longer the powerhouse it once was. Their chances of making any meaningful impact in AFCON 2024 rest mainly on Mo Salah.
If Salah turns up, they could make a deep run. On the face of it, they should be good enough to make the quarter-finals. Anything more than that will be an over-achievement.
Algeria
Algeria has a lot of wrongs to right. They need to silence a lot of critics after their debacle in AFCON 2022.
For what it’s worth, Algeria should get to the quarter-finals.
Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast is a team that divides opinions. However, with the home support that comes with being the host country, they should come good this time around.
They have a young squad featuring the likes of Sebastian Haller, Wilfried Zaha, Nicolas Pepe, and Franck Kessie. Hence, a semi-final place should be a realistic target for the West Africans.
Cameroon
Cameroon’s history in the competition speaks for them. They performed remarkably well on home soil, winning over fans with their brand of attacking football.
Expect them to at least make the quarter-finals.
Tunisia
Tunisia has had a remarkable year. Despite finishing as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage of AFCON 2022, they eliminated pre-tournament favourites Nigeria in the second round.
They added to that remarkable accomplishment by qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. If this upward trajectory is anything to go by, they should at least reprise their quarter-final place in AFCON 2024.
Ghana
After what has been a shaky couple of years for the Black Stars, the future looks bright. Having qualified for the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar after edging Nigeria on away goals, Ghana can go all the way in the coming years.
With seasoned players like Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and captain Andre Ayew in its ranks, Ghanian’s new blend of experience and youth bodes well for the future.
For the World Cup, qualifying from a group that consists of Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea might be too much.
However, expect them to make a deep run in the AFCON 2024. A semi-final place should be the target.
